We Can't Wait to Speak With You!

Here are some ideas to ensure a great conversation

Listen to the Podcast

Be sure to listen to an episode or two of the podcast. This will give you a feel for the cadence, rhythm, and format of True You! discussions. For example, HERE is a True Story! with Peggy Sweeney-McDonald!

Know the True You! Listener

The majority of True You! listeners are adults who are experiencing challenging life situations, such as depression, anxiety, divorce, child behavioral problems, or other emotional difficulties. They are often high-functioning, listen to the podcast on their way to work or during free time, and are looking for inspiration and information to help them overcome their challenges. Before our discussion, think about that listener and how your story might instill hope and inspiration. Listeners are also mental health professionals and experts in the fields of law and science.

Prepare Stories or Anecdotes

For a True Story! interviews, people love hearing stories that they can relate to. It’s useful if you prepare stories or speaking points that represent your own efforts or successes in overcoming your own challenges. Nothing formal; just think about it. Think about a lesson learned, a treatment that worked, an inspirational person in your life, and plan to offer that story if it comes up. And if you have content you know would be of value, be sure to tell your host ahead of time so time is structured into the discussion. Remember, while you will be given guiding questions, your own content is always best!

Review the Interview Outline Sent to You Ahead of Time

You will be given a True You! interview outline well ahead of time. This will include guiding questions and structure for the discussion. Please review that ahead of time and offer additions or deletions to the content. We are not married to the interview questions and it is likely that all will not be asked. The conversation will take on a life of its own.  Download the True You! Interview Format below.

Use Good Quality Audio

Bad audio can make the renowned guest interview fall flat. Here are a few pointers:

  • Use a microphone if you have one. If you expect to be a guest on a podcast regularly, purchase a USB microphone (they’re $30 and up). Or buy a headset with a microphone attached. If worst comes to worst, speak directly into your phone–don’t use a speakerphone as it really messes up the audio quality. Please don’t use your laptop microphone, as it makes the audio sound choppy, echoey, and distant! Earphones with an inline microphone (like Apple wired earphones) work ok, but when you move the microphone tends to rub against clothing; and when you turn your head away from your mic your audio fades.
  • If we decide to use video in addition to audio (not common at True You!), then some kind of light should be shining on you–window light during the day is great!
  • Use fast WiFi or a hard connection. Remember Max Headroom from the mid-1980s Pepsi commercials–you’ll sound like that if you use a poor connection!
  • Find a quiet place with no background noise. Kids, dogs, coffeeshop noise, TVs, cell phone sounds . . . they are very difficult to edit out.
